When an equal split is appropriate
Equal splitting works when every traveler received roughly the same benefit from the shared purchases. Common examples include a rental car used by everyone for the same dates, a group tour, shared groceries, or a meal where the group intentionally agreed to divide the bill evenly.
It is less suitable when trip lengths, room types, activity participation, or individual purchases differ materially. In those situations, first separate individual and optional items, then use a person-night, usage, weighted, or itemized method for the remainder. The goal is a rule the group accepted before the expense—not a mathematically neat result that surprises someone.
How the settlement is calculated
The tool converts each payment to cents, adds the group total, and assigns each traveler an equal share. A traveler who paid more than that share should receive money; a traveler who paid less owes the difference. The suggested transfers match the people who owe with the people who should receive until every balance reaches zero.
